Well the answer is yes, but not quite for those reasons. I bought this on a whim, after all, front man of Depeche Mode has to bring a little of that across and I'm bound to like it aren't I? Dominic Willsīig Depeche Mode fan, also a huge death and black metal fan, goes to show tastes can vary doesn't it? Plus of course, when something is good, it simply is, it transcends genres, it's just plain, downright good. Paper Monsters wird ihn hoffentlich ermutigen, endlich einmal so richtig loszulegen. Aber alles in allem liefern Gahan und sein Mitstreiter Knox Chandler ein gekonntes und stilvolles Werk. Gelegentlich wird alles ein wenig fade ohne Gores scharfzüngige Art. Man mag zwar Gores Dramatik und dessen absonderliche Art vermissen, aber es bleibt ein gefühlsbetonter Charme. Die Texte sind autobiografisch und handeln von Gahans Problemen mit Beziehungen und Drogen. Wir erleben drei verschiedene Typen von Tracks: Da ist der kraftvolle, an Depeche erinnernde Stil ("Dirty Sticky Floors", "Bottle Living"), dann gelassene, großzügig-stimmungsvolle Musik ("A Little Piece", "Bitter Apple", "Stay") und die dröhnende Industrial-Atmosphäre, die sich fast immer zu einem Crescendo aufschwingt ("Black And Blue Again", "Hidden Houses", "Goodbye").
Man merkt nicht, dass hier die besten, bisher noch nicht aufgenommenen Melodien aus einem Zeitraum von 50 Jahren zusammenkommen. Man könnte meinen, Gahan habe dies alles auf einmal geschrieben. Aber seltsamerweise wirkt alles sehr beständig und keineswegs wie das Werk eines Menschen, der sich gerade erst losgeeist hat. Es könnte Gahans Frustration darüber belegen, dass er immer und immer wieder Vince Clarkes und Martin Gores Songs zu singen hatte, während die eigenen in der Schublade verschwanden. Er hat sich sehr viel Zeit gelassen, und so könnte man eigentlich erwarten, dass das Album vor Ideen überschäumt und vielleicht sogar ein wenig chaotisch wird.
